My name is Sam Getty and I am 18 years old and I hail from the state of New Hampshire. I am here at Columbia as a Musical Theater major. Theater is my passion. Ever since I was little I had always wanted to be a performer. My family would take trips down to New York City and we would see Broadway shows. Every time I would see a Broadway show, it would just inspire me in so many ways! Performing was something I knew had to be apart of my life. I have since been in many shows and am here at Columbia to grow as an actor and become successful.
I grew up sort of different then most people I know. I have two lesbian mothers. Through out middle school it was probably one of the most difficult things because I was teased and taunted because I wasn't like everyone else. With all this however I feel that it has made me stronger. I feel like i could deal with pretty much anything! It was very hard also for me to be growing up gay in NH. In NH it is really not excepted by most people to be gay. I was also very much taunted in school for being gay and it hurt me both mentally and physically. There were some days I couldn't even go to school because the every day harassment made me physically sick. I was scared to go to school. However once high school hit, I didn't give a shit what people thought of me. I am who I am and I refused to change for anyone. This is something that I also believe has made me stronger as a person.
I feel that there is so much more that I could mention about myself but I don't want to take up to much room. In closing I just want to express how grateful I am to be here at Columbia. I feel like one of the most luckiest people in the world to have this opportunity to be able to make something out of my passion. I am very excited for this year and the beginning of the rest of my life!
